With the track points season over, Quincy Raceways looked to have some fun, hosting Topless night at the speedway on Sunday. All six regular divisions were on the card for the final time this year - the two day show next weekend will feature a different mix of classes. Perhaps "Topless" should have included a wet T shirt contest. Rain had once again plagued the Tri State area, although the race track had missed the brunt of it. But with heat race action complete for the fifty six entries, a light but stubborn drizzle began to fall. Although track crews tried to keep up with it, eventually the sprinkles won out and the track was lost. With this being the final night of regular racing, a drivers' meeting was then called to determine how the purse would be divided, the decision coming after I had left the facilities.
Although they were unable to add to their points, several QR regulars finished near the top in the national IMCA Late Model standings. Unofficially Tommy Elston finished in the runner up position to one time visitor Zach Zeitner. Jake Griffin was sixth as well as first in the Rookie of the Year chase, and Curtis Glover came home ninth after making the six hour plus round trip each week to Quincy from Runnells, Iowa. Additionally, Darin Weisinger, Denny Woodworth, Sam Halstead, and Jason Oenning placed in the top thirty nationwide. Congratulations to those drivers!
As mentioned, QR will round out the season with a two day extravaganza Friday and Saturday, October 2nd and 3rd featuring $2,000 to win for the Crown Vics, $4,000 for the 4 Cylinders, plus each day top prizes of $1,000 for Late Models and B Modifieds.
